Group works on

Breeding and Genetic improvement of crop plants, viz. opium poppy, chenopodium, Cuphea, Amarnathus, Linseed etc.

Objectives

  • To gather fundamental knowledge of genetics in above crops and develop high yielding varieties
  • To generate larger genetic variability through intra and inter specific hybridization.
  • To characterize different strains and hybrids on the basis of molecular marker and cytological parameters.
  • To determine gene actions and biogenetic pathways of different alkaloids

Achievements

  • Institute has done pioneering work on Opium poppy and Amaranthus. Much of the basic and applied aspects have been worked out.

  • High yielding varieties in Opium poppy viz. NBRI-1, NBRI-2, BROP-1, NBRI-5, NBRI-6, NBRI-9 and NBRI-10 have been developed for commercial cultivation.

  • All Indian land races of opium poppy have been characterized on the basis of phenological characters and taxonomic keynotes.

  • Genetics of Alkaloids and fatty acids have been worked out.

  • Some opium poppy genotypes (recombinants and mutants) with rich thebaine and codeine in opium latex have been identified.

  • Opium poppy has been grouped as oleic-linoleic acid crop with low/traces linolenic acid. This is first report of its kind in opium poppy.

  • New oil seed crop Cuphea species has been introduced for first time in India at the Institute for developing medium chain fatty acids cultivars.

  • Three varieties of grain Amaranthus viz. AG-114, AG-67 and AG-21 have been developed.

  • Different foliage color types have been evolved in Amaranthus.

  • Large exotic collections of grain chenopods (Chenopodium quinoa) and vegetable chenopods (C.album) and their relative are maintained.

  • The chenopods germplasms have been characterized cytologically and nuclear DNA amount basis.

  • Filed patent for 'A novel high yielding multiple disease resistant/tolerant stable variety 'MADKINI' of opium poppy'.
  • Recombinants with low α- linolenic acid (omega-3 fatty acid) have been generated to breed for edible purpose linseed varieties.
