CSIR-NBRI is a premier plant science R&D institute with state of the
art facilities and expertise for undertaking multidisciplinary research in plant
sciences. During the last decade there has been a tremendous upsurge in the
study of plants as source of medicines, nutraceuticals, dietary supplements,
cosmoceuticals, biopesticides and several secondary metabolites. In view of
this, the institute has recently, established a CIF (Central Instrumentation
Facility) with high tech and sophisticated instruments to cater the services to
the institutes/organizations/individuals and developing projects in
public private partnership (PPP) mode. CIF is NABL accreditated and well
equipped for pysico-chemical and analytical analysis of various plant based
products. Under this facility NBRI provides the services for the analysis of
essential oils, vegetable oils, herbal drugs, pesticides, heavy metals using
sophisticated analytical instruments. Based on scientific knowledge developed at
NBRI, the institute has expertise in quantitative and qualitative analysis of
several groups of secondary and primary metabolites which includes polyphenols,
alkaloids, withanolides, andrographolides, furocoumarins, amino acids, proteins
etc. using HPLC-DAD, LC-MS/MS & HPTLC. Complete infrastructural facilities for
analysis of essential oils and contract research (in Public-Private mode of
partnership) are available with the institute. NBRI is recognized by AYUSH as
center for standardization and quality control of herbal drugs and has also been
involved in preparation of monographs for Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India. The
institute is having facility for determination of heavy metal content in various
sample types like soil, water and plant materials. Apart from these, NBRI is
also having high end extraction technique in the form of supercritical fluid
extraction equipment which is used for selective extraction of essential oils,
aroma chemicals and other non-polar compounds. Today NBRI has established its
valuable identity at national and international level as a unique center of
excellence for research on natural products.
